Happy New Year!
Relics is starting this lovely Newest Year with a creative twist and a creative challenge!
Relics recently acquired a vintage set of encyclopedias. Every home seemed to have a set- but due to the invent of the laptop, the computer and wikipedia- most people have gotten rid of their old fashioned trustworthy hardcopy books of knowledge.
So we wanted to do something special with our set.
This year the word for Relics is Create. We made that our resolution, to try and make our lives more creative- so we are extending and offering the challenge to all of you as well....
Our Set of Encyclopedias has been renamed "The Encyclopedias of Lost Mischief" we are housing the set at Relics- each volume can be checked out like a library book- we ask that you fill a page with one or more of these things-
1. Drawings
2. Paintings
3. Collages
4. Poems
5. Random bit of art
6. Anything that makes you feel creative
Starting on Monday January 16th- there are will be the set of 21 books to check out at your leisure- your goal is to do 21 creative project over the next 12 months. One or more for each book in the set. You can keep the book for up to 10 days. You don't have to sign your work if you don't want to- if you want to leave a random bit - that's ok too- If you get through the set and want to do more- feel free!
Next January- we will have them displayed at a First Fridays Gallery Event somewhere in Peoria. They then will be donated as a collection to the Peoria Historical Society.

The last winner - for the Peoria Quirky Landmark is Mary Houvenagle!
Mary was right! The headless woman is none other than Ms. Lydia Bradley Herself ! The statue is located on the campus of Bradley University- and represents the woman who started it all. Lydia founded Bradley Universty in 1897 as a liberal arts college.
Such a wonderful lasting gift she made to her community.

Don't forget the next Relics Book Group!
November 13th at Relics from 4-6pm this months book is
Who, you might ask, is Henrietta Lacks (1920-1951) and why is she the subject of a book? On the surface, this short-lived African American Virginian seems an unlikely candidate for immortality. In truth, we all owe Ms. Lacks a great debt and some of us owe her our lives. As Rebecca Skloot tells us in this riveting human story, Henrietta was the involuntary donor of cells. This is the story of her and her cells and the family she left behind..... and the ethics of taking organs and tissues and what happens to them in the future....
Took a trip recently through some Peoria area grave yards- why are the old stones, so much more charming then the newer stones? The pictures the fonts, all of it- so so lovely....
Mexican culture sends families into the graveyards to celebrate and remember the ones that have passed. The literally fill their cars with family, friends, foods and candles and head to their families grave markers for a party...
Exploring old grave yards has been something I have loved to do, since I was a kid. I grew up near a grave yard (learned to ride my bike there in fact - One of the only places my dad would let me ride my bike- because as he liked to say- there are no cars to hit you and you can ride the streets of a grave yard all day long- and get good at riding your bike safest place around- because nobody is ever there== indeed dad!)
I encourage you to find and explore an old lost cemetery. The one I was in above- is on highway 116 on the Peoria side of Farmington. But you can find these little lost and beautiful gems everywhere. Take the kids. Bring their bikes... :)
(**please remember to always be respectful)
I had the wonderful opportunity this last weekend to attend the wedding of one of my husbands cousins. We flew to Southern California for a few days.
First let me say, the wedding was beautiful in everyway. A black tie event. My only problem, was that when I got to the wedding, I realized, first, that it was a black tie event, Ben my husband forgot to mention that part to me, and second, that other than my husband I knew no one. At first I found myself being a wall flower, then I picked up my camera and just starting taking pictures of some of the wedding details that made me the most happy.
I call it Blink. It's all the details the big photographers might have missed, things you might catch for a second- then when you blink, they're gone. When you look back at your special day, it's all those little blinks, that you wish you could keep forever.
enjoy.
Do you know who this headless woman is????
